The mountain road between Tokyo and the Sea of Japan, taken slowly: Matsumoto's black castle, Takayama's sake-brewery old town and morning markets, a whole afternoon and evening among the thatched gassho farmhouses of UNESCO-listed Shirakawa-go, and Kanazawa — Kenrokuen garden, the geisha teahouse district, the freshest crab market on the coast. Ends at Kanazawa Station, one shinkansen ride from Tokyo.

Leave Tokyo through the Chuo valley. Afternoon at Matsumoto-jo, the 'Crow Castle', its black keep doubled in the moat with the Alps behind. Night in Matsumoto — try basashi or soba.
Cross the mountain passes to Takayama. Walk Sanmachi Suji's dark-timber merchant lanes, taste at 200-year-old sake breweries, see the festival floats. Night in Takayama.
Morning market by the river, then into the mountains to Shirakawa-go. Climb to the Ogimachi viewpoint for the whole thatched village at once, then wander the lanes and farmhouse museums until the tour buses leave and the valley goes quiet. Night in the area.
Down to the coast. Kenrokuen — one of Japan's three perfect gardens — the Higashi Chaya teahouse streets, gold-leaf crafts, and Omicho Market for a seafood-bowl lunch. Night in Kanazawa.
The samurai lanes of Nagamachi or the contemporary art museum, as you prefer, then we put you on the Hokuriku Shinkansen — about two and a half hours back to Tokyo.
