Noboribetsu Hell Valley stands in Noboribetsu City, Hokkaido, near Lake Toya, as the remnants of an ancient volcanic crater formed roughly 10,000 years ago. A roughly 450-meter-wide zone continuously releases white vapor in an area barren of vegetation, marked by pungent sulfur odors. The name reflects the hellish landscape. Showa Shinzan emerged in 1943 when a severe earthquake triggered Mount Usu's eruption near Lake Toya. Rapid ground uplift created a new mountain that grew actively until September 10, 1945, experiencing 17 major episodes over two years. This 398-meter peak was named Showa Shinzan and designated a Special Natural Monument in 1957. The mountain remains "alive," releasing white smoke from its russet summit. Bear Ranch sits beside the Showa-shinzan Ropeway entrance and holds approximately 100 purebred Hokkaido Brown Bears, Hokkaido's largest wild mammals. Visitors feed these creatures, which commonly rear up and gesture with their front paws for food—a memorable experience. Locally made horse oil products are also well-regarded here. Adult admission costs 850 JPY (junior high school age and older); children (ages 6 and above) pay 500 JPY per person. Lake Toya spreads across southwestern Hokkaido as a freshwater caldera lake within Shikotsu-Toya National Park. Its roughly circular form spans approximately 10 kilometers in diameter, covers 70.72 square kilometers, and has a 50-kilometer shoreline. Maximum depth reaches 180 meters with an average of 117 meters, holding 8.19 cubic kilometers of water. The surface sits 84 meters above sea level. It ranks as Japan's northernmost ice-free lake. Otaru showcases Japan's sole European-style museum. The historic canal district features red-brick and gray-tiled warehouses from the Meiji period, offering peaceful strolls with companions along serene waterways.
