Open it on ANOTHER device or print it so your phone can scan it. On the same phone, save the QR image and pick “From photo” in the next step.
Settings → Cellular
Add eSIM → Use QR Code
Scan the QR code from the email
The phone shows “Activating eSIM…” — leave it until it finishes.
Label it “Japan” so it's not confused with your home SIM
Cellular Data → select the Japan plan
Turn ON Data Roaming for this plan
Skip this step and you'll have NO data in Japan — the #1 mistake.
Turn off Airplane Mode, give it 1–2 minutes
The path differs slightly: Settings → Cellular → Add Cellular Plan → scan the QR. Everything else is the same. eSIM needs iPhone XR/XS or newer.
Most phones configure themselves when the QR installs — nothing to type. If your phone asks for an APN, the value is in the SAME email as your QR code — it varies by plan, which is why it isn't hard-coded here.
