How to Spend a Day Hiking Mt. Aso

A full day, hour by hour

8:00 — Train Kumamoto → Aso

• JR Hohi Line from Kumamoto, 1 hr 20 min, ¥1,080

9:30 — Bus to Mt. Aso (Nakadake crater)

• Aso Sancho Bus from Aso Station ¥650 one-way, 35 min
• The cable car closed after the 2016 earthquake — bus only
• Bus stops at the crater rim

10:00 — Nakadake crater

• Active volcano — check the JMA website before going
• Sulphur plumes + turquoise water at the bottom
• Concrete shelters every 100m on the access road (in case of eruption)
• ¥800 bus + access fee

11:30 — Kusasenri grasslands

• Bus down to mid-station Kusasenri-ga-hama
• 78-hectare flat plain with two small lakes
• Horseback rides ¥1,500/15 min
• Picnic with views into the 25km caldera — largest in the world

13:00 — Aso akaushi lunch

• Aso's specialty grass-fed red wagyu
• Aso no Sato Tabemono akaushi steak ¥3,500
• Or akaushi curry rice ¥1,800

14:30 — Aso Volcano Museum

• ¥860, 09:00–17:00
• Models + a live camera into Nakadake
• Kids love it

16:00 — Shirakawa Springs

• Pure Aso source water
• ¥100 entry, two icy 14°C turquoise pools
• 30-min drive from Mt. Aso

17:30 — Back to Kumamoto

• JR Hohi Line back to Kumamoto
