Hokkaido self-drive — 7-day itinerary

Sapporo → Furano → Biei → Asahikawa → Sounkyo → Otaru — distances, parking and onsen stops.

Day 1-2: Sapporo pickup → Furano (140 km)

Collect your car at New Chitose Airport (CTS) counter — shuttle from Terminal 1 ground floor, 5 min. Overnight at Susukino for food and coffee, then drive Route 452 south-east through Mikasa to Furano. Lavender season July. Park at Farm Tomita free, eat melon soft-serve ¥450.

Day 3: Furano → Biei (30 km)

Short day on Route 237 between the two towns. Photograph Shikisai-no-Oka (¥500 parking), Blue Pond (Aoike) — best at 10 AM when mist lifts, and Patchwork Road loops. Overnight in a Biei B&B or head 25 km north to Asahikawa for city comforts.

Day 4-5: Asahikawa → Sounkyo Gorge (100 km)

Route 39 east hugs a river valley through Sounkyo — waterfalls Ginga-no-taki and Ryusei-no-taki are 1-minute walks off the highway. Stay at Sounkyo Onsen ryokan (¥14,000-22,000 half-board). Optional side trip: Daisetsuzan ropeway to Mt. Kurodake.

Day 6: Sounkyo → Otaru (220 km)

Take the Dōō Expressway (Asahikawa → Sapporo section is ¥3,000 ETC) for speed, exit at Otaru-IC. Walk the canal at blue hour, try sushi at Otaru Masazushi, buy glassware on Sakaimachi-dori. Park at Otaru Unga Parking ¥600/2h.

Day 7: Otaru → New Chitose (100 km, return)

Allow 2.5 hours including fuel top-up and the 5-min shuttle to the terminal. Return with a full tank — receipts must show the refuel within 10 km of the drop-off. Flight check-in 2 hours for international. Total trip: ~650 km, ETC toll ¥6,500-8,000.
