The Tokyo Chapter's "Curated for Families" Japan Itinerary

I have created this three week Japan itinerary as I want to share our favourite things to do in Japan as a family.

This three-week itinerary is crafted to highlight family-friendly experiences in Japan. It emphasizes leisurely travel with a balance of traditional and modern elements throughout your visit. This plan includes opportunities for playtime and unique activities that may not be widely known prior to your trip. I also prioritize meal times as a key component of your experience in Japan, where food encounters can reveal insights about the culture and language. I aim to accommodate picky eaters with various options throughout this itinerary. If you have particularly selective eaters, consider providing them an early dinner option before exploring local restaurants. You may order simpler dishes for them while keeping them engaged with coloring books or stickers during adult meal times. Every suggested dining spot is family-friendly. Feel free to adapt this itinerary based on your family's needs, preferences, and budget, or simply focus on individual days that interest you. I'm here to guide you in making your family trip to Japan enjoyable and seamless. *To facilitate travel, I suggest utilizing Japan's luggage forwarding services for every second hotel, allowing for carry-on luggage only while traveling via bullet train.*

Arrival and orientation in the city
The first day serves as an important foundation for your family trip. It’s essential to convey the atmosphere of Japan to everyone. Today is focused on the urban experience. Visit a convenience store where everyone can pick a snack. For suggestions on popular items, check thetokyochapter.com, which also provides insights on various milk options. I suggest starting your city exploration in Shibuya.
Urban exploration with outdoor play and green spaces
A stroller will be useful for this day. Download the mamapap map app for easy access to restrooms and baby changing facilities in the area.
A day at the theme park & Team Lab Planets
This day is more manageable for parents as most activities are located in one area. A significant portion of the time will be indoors, providing a comfortable escape from inclement weather. The day begins early but concludes in time for a restful night. *Ensure everyone has shorts for the Team Lab Planets visit.
Pick up rental car & visit Hakone (Lake Ashi)
You'll pick up your rental car today from Tokyo (it needs to be returned to Tokyo in a few days since picking up and dropping off at different locations can complicate matters). Dress warmly as temperatures will drop at the ropeway.
Family exploration in Hakone
After breakfast, head to Hakone Open Air Museum, with convenient parking available.
Transition to the Fujikawaguchiko / Fujiyoshida region
The following two days will feature various family-friendly locations, all offering stunning views of Mt. Fuji. Recommended hotels include: Rakuten Villa Kawaguchiko, Villa Fuji Bon Yoyage Sora, Bessho Sasa Ryokan, Fuji View Hotel.
Final day for magnificent Mt. Fuji sights and car return to Tokyo
Return the car to Tokyo in the afternoon or evening and spend the night in Tokyo, either near the rental drop-off point or close to Shinagawa Station.
Traveling to Kyoto
Take a bullet train from either Shinagawa or Tokyo Station. I recommend Shinagawa as it tends to be less crowded, which is advantageous for traveling with children.
Discovering Kyoto
Exploring Arashiyama & Fushimi Inari
A more relaxed day to experience various aspects of Kyoto.
