Your Residence Card (Zairyu Card) and visa have expiration dates — don't let them lapse! This guide covers visa renewal and getting your My Number Card (Japan's digital ID).
1. Visa / Residence Status Renewal
- Apply 3 months before expiry
- Submit at the Regional Immigration Bureau (or online at immigration.e-gov.go.jp)
Common documents (work visa)
- Application form
- Passport + current Zairyu Card
- Employment certificate from company
- 3 months' pay slips
- Fee: ¥4,000
2. My Number Card
My Number is a 12-digit ID number assigned to all Japan residents including foreigners. The physical card allows you to:
- Print Juminhyo at Konbini (24/7)
- File taxes online (eTax)
- Use as health insurance card (from 2024)
How to get it
- Receive My Number notification by mail after address registration
- Register online at mynumbercard.kojin-bango.go.jp or at city hall
- Wait 1–2 months → pick up card at city hall
