Nara — a perfect day trip from Kyoto or Osaka

Nara was Japan's first permanent capital (710–784), world-famous for the 1,200-plus sika deer that roam freely through its park and streets — considered messengers of the gods in Japanese mythology.

Getting there

  • From Kyoto: JR Nara Line, 45 minutes, ¥720 — JR Pass accepted
  • From Osaka: JR Yamatoji Line or Kintetsu-Nara Line, 40–50 minutes, ¥570–800
  • Kintetsu-Nara Station is closer to the park than JR Nara Station (5-minute walk versus 20)

Half-day itinerary

  1. 10:00 — arrive Kintetsu-Nara Station
  2. 10:15 — Nara Park, meet your first deer
  3. 11:00 — Todai-ji (the world's largest wooden temple, home to the 15m Great Buddha)
  4. 12:30 — lunch in the Naramachi district
  5. 14:00 — Kasuga Taisha (thousands of ancient lanterns)
  6. 16:00 — head back to Kyoto or Osaka

Rules for feeding the deer (deer crackers)

Deer crackers (shika senbei) are sold for ¥200 a stack at park entrances.

  • Use the whole stack at once — don't break it piece by piece or the deer will chase you
  • Bow to the deer — many have learned to bow back
  • Stash maps and food in your bag — deer tug fast
  • Small children feeding deer should always have an adult helping

Attractions

Todai-ji — the world's largest wooden temple

  • Hours: 7:30–17:30 (until 18:00 in summer)
  • Admission: ¥800 adult
  • Highlights: the 15m Great Buddha (Daibutsu) in bronze and colossal wooden Nio guardian statues

Kasuga Taisha — 3,000 lanterns

  • Outer grounds are free; ¥500 to enter the lantern hall
  • The shrine grounds are wrapped in the sacred Kasugayama forest (a UNESCO World Heritage site)

Naramachi — the old town

  • Traditional wooden machiya houses
  • Local cafes and craft workshops
  • Free to wander on foot

Seasonal tips

  • Spring (March–April): sakura plus deer = dreamy photos
  • Autumn (November): red foliage throughout the park
  • Winter: fewer tourists, deer are still out in force
  • Summer (July–August): hot, 33–35°C — bring water

Groups and families

Traveling with small children or a group of 8+? Consider a charter bus with driver — especially handy if you're combining Kyoto–Nara–Osaka in a single day.
