Why Kyoto is a must-visit
Kyoto (京都) was Japan's capital for more than 1,000 years (794–1868), home to over 2,000 temples and shrines, 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites, and the mysterious world of the geisha. With vivid sakura in April and blazing autumn foliage in November, Kyoto is gorgeous in almost every season.
Suggested 3-day itinerary
Day 1 — Downtown & Eastern Kyoto
- Morning: Kiyomizu-dera and the Sannenzaka old streets
- Lunch: udon or soba in Gion
- Afternoon: Gion + Yasaka Shrine + Maruyama Park
- Evening: Pontocho Alley, watching for geisha between 6–8pm
Day 2 — Fushimi Inari & Arashiyama
- Early morning 6am: Fushimi Inari Taisha (beat the crowds for photos)
- Noon: JR back to Kyoto Station, then JR Sagano Line to Saga-Arashiyama
- Afternoon: Arashiyama bamboo grove + Tenryu-ji + Togetsukyo Bridge
- Evening: return to Kyoto, try local bites at Nishiki Market
Day 3 — Kinkaku-ji + Ryoan-ji
- Morning: Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Pavilion) — opens at 9am
- Noon: Ryoan-ji (the famous Zen rock garden)
- Afternoon: Philosopher's Path during sakura (April) or autumn foliage (November) seasons

Money-saving transport tips
- Kyoto City Bus 1-day pass ¥700 — very useful and covers most attractions
- JR Pass Kansai Wide ¥12,000/5 days — worth it if combining with Osaka, Himeji, Nara
- Use Hikari / Sakura shinkansen with a JR Pass; Nozomi is not covered
- Taxis in Kyoto are expensive (¥500+ for the first km) — prioritize bus and train
Must-try foods
- Nishin soba (soba with pickled herring) — a local specialty
- Yudofu (hot tofu) — in the Nanzen-ji area
- Matcha warabimochi — Gion
- Kyo-kaiseki — upscale multi-course dinner
Suggested services
If you're traveling with a group or family, consider:
- Charter bus rental — convenient for Kyoto + Nara + Osaka in one day
- Kimono rental in Gion — ¥3,000–5,000/day, returned to the shop
- JR Pass — saves a lot if you're doing a round trip Tokyo–Kyoto
Final thoughts
Kyoto can't be rushed. Give yourself 3–4 days to savor it slowly: rise early to shoot Fushimi Inari at 6am, rent a kimono and stroll Gion in the afternoon, sit at a canal-side cafe and listen to the water. That's Kyoto the way it's meant to be.
