Japan's train system can look overwhelming at first, but with an IC card (Suica or Pasmo), you can navigate the entire country effortlessly. This 2026 complete guide teaches you everything from buying your first card to riding the Shinkansen.

1. IC Cards: Suica vs Pasmo vs ICOCA

CardIssued byWhere to buy **Suica 🟢**JR EastJR station machines, Apple/Google Wallet **Pasmo 🔵**Tokyo MetroMetro station machines **ICOCA 🟡**JR WestJR stations in Osaka/Kyoto area

2026: Suica and Pasmo are available as digital cards in Apple Wallet and Google Pay!

2. How to Buy & Top Up

  • At a ticket machine, select "Suica" or "IC Card"

  • Choose amount (minimum ¥1,000 incl. ¥500 deposit + ¥500 balance)

Top-up locations: Ticket machines at stations, Konbini (7-Eleven, Lawson), Suica App via credit card

3. Using the Gate

  • Tap your card on the blue sensor → hear a beep = OK

  • Ride to your destination

  • Tap again at the exit gate → fare deducted automatically

4. Shinkansen – Separate Ticket Required

IC cards do NOT cover Shinkansen. You need two tickets: a base fare + limited express fee. Book via Smart EX app for the easiest experience.

5. Use IC Cards Beyond Transit

  • ✅ All Konbini stores

  • ✅ Vending machines with IC logo

  • ✅ Many restaurants & cafes

  • ✅ Taxis, some parking lots
