Why arrive at 6 AM?
Fushimi Inari Taisha is one of the most crowded tourist sites in Japan — after 8 AM you almost can't take a photo without a person in the frame. The secret: arrive before 7, ideally 6.
The great part: the shrine is open 24/7 and free — you can enter anytime.
Getting there from central Kyoto
- JR Nara Line: Kyoto Station → Inari Station (2 stops, 5 min, ¥150). 3-min walk to the shrine
- Keihan Line: Sanjo → Fushimi-Inari Station (10 min, ¥220)
- Taxi from Gion: ¥1,500–2,000
The first JR train at 5:30 AM from Kyoto Station — puts you at Inari by 5:40.
Optimal 6:00–8:00 route
- 6:00 — Main Romon gate (bright red, first photo)
- 6:15 — Start climbing through the Senbon Torii tunnel (thousands of gates)
- 6:45 — Yotsutsuji intersection — full Kyoto view + sunrise
- 7:30 — Head back down, tourists are starting to fill in
- 8:00 — Return to Kyoto, breakfast at Nishiki Market
Best photo angles
- Senbon Torii tunnel — shoot from inside the tunnel, beautiful sun rays at 6:30
- View from behind the torii row — you can see black characters on the red pillars
- Kitsune statue (fox deity statues) — at the sub-shrines
- Yotsutsuji view — sweeping view of Kyoto from above
Photography tips
- Comfortable shoes — 4 km walking + hill climbing
- Wide lens (24mm) to capture both gates + sky
- Rent a kimono in Kyoto (¥3,000+) for the best shot — but a kimono on a hill climb is exhausting
- A small LED light if you go before 6 AM in winter (still dark out)
Combine into one day
After Fushimi Inari, you still have the whole day for:
- 9:00 — Breakfast at Kyoto Station
- 10:00 — Arashiyama bamboo forest (JR Sagano Line)
- 14:00 — Gion + Pontocho
- 18:00 — Kaiseki dinner
Notes
- No ATMs nearby — bring cash for the return taxi
- Toilets at Romon and Yotsutsuji
- Snack stalls only open after 9 AM
For groups
If you're 10+ people and don't want to rely on the early-morning train, consider chartering a bus from your hotel — ¥30,000–50,000/one-way for a 26-seater.
