How to install eSIM on iPhone — Step-by-step guide
Install eSIM on iPhone XS and newer — 7 steps with screenshots. Works on iOS 16, 17, 18.
Step 1-3: Open, add, scan
Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Use QR Code. Point camera at QR in email. iPhone auto-detects and fetches profile in 5-15 seconds.
Step 4-5: Label and select primary
Enter label "Japan eSIM". Choose "Use as Secondary" to keep VN SIM as primary (recommended). If "Primary" — VN SIM becomes secondary, SMS to VN number won't arrive unless toggled.
Step 6-7: Data settings
Cellular Data: select "Japan eSIM". Allow Cellular Data Switching: ON (auto-fallback if one line has no signal). Data Roaming: LEAVE OFF for now — turn on only after landing in Japan.
Verify install
Settings → Cellular → you should see two lines: SIM VN + Japan eSIM. Status of Japan eSIM shows "No Service" until data roaming is toggled on in Japan. That's expected.
