While many travelers focus on Osaka, Kyoto, and Nara, some of the most remarkable experiences in western Japan lie a bit further afield. This 10-day itinerary merges the vibrancy of Osaka with rewarding destinations throughout Kansai and the Setouchi region. Using Osaka as your base, you will embark on convenient day trips to Wakayama and Hyogo Prefecture, where you can board the famous Cat Train, visit the stunning Himeji Castle, and explore the trendy waterfront city of Kobe. The journey progresses westward to Okayama, Kurashiki, and Kagawa, where you will encounter historic streets, beautiful gardens, rich local culture, and stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea—a different aspect of Japan that tends to be overlooked by many tourists. Having spent time in Okayama and with family in Kagawa, these are spots I have personally enjoyed and recommend. This route caters to those who wish to take in iconic attractions while enjoying a relaxed pace and discovering unique sights. It is ideal for first-time visitors looking to explore beyond the typical tourist route, as well as returning travelers who seek a deeper understanding of western Japan.
