Overnight Bus in Japan: Tips for a Comfortable Journey

Seat classes, SA/PA stops, what to pack, picking a seat, tricks for 6–8 hours of real sleep — a practical handbook for first-time night-bus riders.

The Japanese overnight bus (yakou bus) is famously clean and punctual. With a few tricks you can sleep 6–8 hours and wake up in a new city ready to sightsee.

Pick the right seat class

If budget allows, choose Relax (3-across, 135° recline, privacy curtain) or higher. Economy 4-across is cheap but hard to sleep in. Comodo and Prime have independent seats — worth it on 8h+ routes.

What to pack

  • U-pillow
  • Eye mask
  • Noise-cancelling headphones
  • Light jacket — AC is cool
  • 500 ml water (refill at SA)
  • Power bank

SA / PA rest stops

Buses stop 2–3 times at Service or Parking Areas, 15–20 min each. Larger SAs have 24h diners, convenience stores and vending. The driver announces the next departure time — don't be late, the bus leaves.

Seat tips

  • Middle rows (5–7) are smoothest
  • Avoid last (toilet) and first (door) rows
  • Window seats have headrest support
💡 Tokyo→Osaka routes usually have 2 drivers swapping mid-route for safety.
