Osaka-Umeda→Kyoto-Kawaramachi: 40 min, ¥410. Private railway, not JR. More scenic through older neighborhoods. Arrives in Kyoto's downtown Kawaramachi (heart of restaurants/shopping), not JR Kyoto station. Best for Gion/Kiyomizu area.
Yodoyabashi (Osaka)→Gion-Shijo: 60 min, ¥420. Private. Slowest but arrives right at Gion (geisha district). Skip Kyoto station entirely. Best if Gion/Higashiyama is your hotel area.
Shin-Osaka→Kyoto: 14 min, ¥1,450 (Hikari reserved). 2x faster but 2.5x price vs JR Rapid. Only worth it if: you have JR Pass (free), or connecting to/from long-distance Shinkansen without leaving station.
